Since 1974, millions of Americans have saved billions of pre-tax dollars in Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs). Thanks to continued savings and investment returns, an estimated $3.6 trillion is currently invested in IRAs, and the total continues to grow. Last week, a federal law was enacted allowing IRA owners to share the wealth of their retirement savings by giving directly to charity—without first counting it as income and paying income tax.

Youth camp gets participants fired up - July 25, 2006

“I want to risk my life to save others,” said Jason Campbell, a high school student and junior firefighter. Though it seems like a lofty statement coming from a 16-year-old, for Campbell it’s only natural - firefighting is in his blood. Campbell was one of more than 50 junior and cadet firefighters ages 14-18 who attended OYFETA, Ohio Youth Fire and EMS Training Academy, June 9-15. The weeklong residential camp draws participants from four states and is hosted by the Ohio State Firefighters’ Association Youth Programs Committee and sponsored by the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio.

Announcement of Wayne F. White Scholarship Awards Pending - July 11, 2006

Wayne F. White scholarships are awarded annually to high school seniors who reside in and are graduating schools located within the 29 counties of Appalachian Ohio. Criteria for selection of recipients will include (but not be limited to) the following considerations: Students have obtained or will obtain a high school diploma or GED, and will show proof of acceptance at an accredited 2-year or 4-year institution of higher education.

FAO Awarded National Standards Certification - July 11, 2006

In order to achieve Confirmation of Compliance with the National Standards, community foundations must undergo an extensive review of their organizational and financial policies and procedures. The review is performed by trained, experienced community foundation practitioners and is the same for all foundations, regardless of size. Of the nearly 700 community foundations in the United States, more than 500 have pledged to comply with the National Standards.

The Foundation recognizes the importance of education as the common denominator for the future success for our young people and adults, to bring about positive change for Appalachian Ohio. Therefore, the Foundation is committed to building endowed scholarship and grant resources for our region.

Wayne F. White Scholarship Applications Now Available for Graduating High School Seniors - May 10, 2006

The Foundation is now accepting applications for the Wayne F. White Scholarship Awards Program. These scholarships will be awarded on an annual basis to high school seniors who reside in and are graduating schools located within the 29 counties of Appalachian Ohio. The deadline for submission of applications to the Foundation is May 25, 2006.

Topics for the workshop included Booth Design, Wholesale and Retail Markets, Effective Jury Slides, Pricing, and Promotion Power and more. Several topics were taught more than once to allow participants to take full advantage of the curriculum. The workshop was presented by the Arts Business Institute (ABI), a professional, nonprofit training organization that focuses on product development, pricing, public relations, sales techniques, wholesaling and much more.
